Maintaining any arena is one of prime factors in determining it’s life expectancy. Prolonged use in one area caused by lunging or jumping will result in damage to the structural base unless the required minimum depth is maintained.
Different surfaces will require different designs of levelling devices, for
example sand/rubber or PVC arenas should be maintained with a flat tubular
or box section frame that will drag the high spots into the low diverts.
Where as waxed or coated surfaces will require light tines and rollers to
loosen or condition the top inch of material.
Ideally levelling equipment is mounted on a compact tractor’s three point linkage so it can be raised and lowered to give you more control and better access. Where as towing equipment on a chain behind a 4 x 4 or quad bike is acceptable, but misses the important areas in the corners.

Watering may be required during long hot spells on some surfaces, and droppings need to be removed as soon as possible so as not to contaminate the surface and block the membrane and drains.
